<button> element is automatically focusable, activatable via keyboard, and announced correctly by screen readers. A <div> with onclick is none of these things without significant extra work.

Heading Hierarchy

A logical heading structure (H1 → H2 → H3) is the primary navigation mechanism for screen reader users. Many use heading navigation to scan pages — just as sighted users scan visually. Never skip heading levels or use headings purely for visual styling.


Keyboard Navigation

Every interactive element on your site must be fully operable using only a keyboard — no mouse required. This is essential for users with motor disabilities and for power users who prefer keyboard navigation.

Focus Management

  • All interactive elements (links, buttons, form fields, modals) must receive keyboard focus
  • Focus must be visible — the default browser focus indicator is often removed by CSS resets and never replaced. WCAG 2.2 introduced Success Criterion 2.4.11 (Focus Appearance) requiring a minimum visible focus indicator

Keyboard Traps

Modal dialogs and custom dropdown menus must trap focus within themselves while open (so Tab doesn’t escape to the background) and return focus to the trigger element when closed.

A “Skip to main content” link at the very top of the page allows keyboard users to bypass repetitive navigation on every page load. It can be visually hidden but must become visible on focus:

ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) is a set of HTML attributes that add semantic information to elements that HTML alone cannot express — particularly for custom interactive components like tabs, accordions, sliders, and date pickers.

The First Rule of ARIA

Do not use ARIA if you can use a native HTML element instead.

ARIA supplements HTML — it does not replace it. A native <button> is always preferable to a <div role="button">.

Color and Visual Accessibility

Color Contrast

WCAG 2.2 AA requires a minimum contrast ratio between text and its background:

  • 4.5:1 for normal text (under 18pt / 14pt bold)
  • 3:1 for large text (18pt+ / 14pt+ bold)
  • 3:1 for UI components and graphical objects (icons, chart lines, form borders)

Use tools like WebAIM Contrast Checker or Colour Contrast Analyser to verify ratios. Low contrast is one of the most common accessibility failures — and one of the easiest to fix.

  •  Valid, well-structured HTML (validate with W3C Validator)
  •  One <main> landmark, logical heading hierarchy (one H1)
  •  ARIA used correctly — no invalid roles, no missing required attributes
  •  Site tested with at least one screen reader
  •  Automated axe scan passing with zero critical violations
